   The Area

Squirrel cottage is an excellent base for those who enjoy activity based holidays such as walking or cycling (various maps and guide books are available on the bookshelf. We also have 2 cycles we are happy to lend our guests.) It has immediate access to a network of small country lanes and a myriad of footpaths which extend across large parts of east Suffolk.

The cottage is set in an area of outstanding natural beauty with many well known places a short drive or cycle ride away, Minsmere bird reserve, Iken and Orford to name but a few. A short distance away is Tunstall and Rendlesham Forests which contain Fallow and Roe Deer and a wide variety of beautiful birds. Some of the county’s best loved seaside resorts are on the doorstep such as Aldeburgh, Thorpeness, Southwold, Walberswick and Dunwich. Those visitors wishing to explore local history can visit Sutton Hoo - the famous burial ship site and Framlingham and Orford Castles.

Snape Maltings Concert Hall provides a focus for a wide range of cultural activity such as Opera, classical concerts, dance, poetry as well as Jazz and modern music. The concert hall is within easy walking distance from the cottage. Aldeburgh is just a ten minute drive away and has its own cultural festivities as well as a cinema.

The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds currently manages 133 hectares of land in the Snape area. The RSPB now owns 61 hectares of land at Abbey Farm (at the bottom of the lane) and, in conjunction with the Environment Agency, intends to create a new wetland for wildlife. Water levels will be raised across the site to allow reedbeds to spread and provide a home for rare species such as bitterns, marsh harriers, otters and water voles.

Snape has a good range of local amenities including a petrol station selling essentials, a garage for any car maintenance issues and a fabulous range of shops, including produce from Pump Street Bakery at the famous Snape Maltings.

Newspapers can be purchased at the Village Hall which also hosts the Post Office.

A wide variety of local produce can be found at the local farmers market and the nearby farm shop.
